Controlling Autumn flies

Flies (Brachycera) belong to the order of the bipeds. About 120 families of different types of flies belong to this order. The housefly is perhaps best known and almost everything about a fly is very unsanitary, even the way they reproduce. We will help to remove the autumn flies.

The autumn fly can be a real plague for cows and horses, because they often move around the eyes and spread their bacteria everywhere which has unpleasant consequences for the animals.

We have created a summarized article for you. See below for all information about this pest!

    The Autumn fly issue

Flies have a health risk to you and everyone around you. In addition, the hum of this flying insect is very annoying and it can also easily spread all kinds of diseases.

Salmonella, cholera, parasitic worms and tuberculosis are examples of diseases that can be spread by flies. There are species that bite humans and animals and that is why it is sometimes also nice for your (pets) animals to tackle the nuisance, if it can no longer be properly controlled by yourself.

An autumn fly infestation can develop in no time, because it only takes a few days for the fly egg to grow into an adult. In addition, females lay between 400-600 eggs during their entire life.

The Autumn fly: brother of the chamber fly

The autumn fly is quite similar to the house fly and is about the same size. The eyes of the male are almost against each other and the abdomen is yellow with a black stripe. The female is less yellow on the abdomen and her eyes are not that close to each other. Females deposit eggs under the surface of a dunghill in the spring. This is done very systematically; in groups of 6 to 26 pieces.

The larvae then go through 3 stages within 10 days and each year 1 to 2 generations of autumn flies develop. You will probably not be bothered by these flies in March to November. The larvae feed on manure from cows and horses, but once they reach adulthood they can feed on honey, polls and aphid secretions.

The females often sit near the eyes and ears of horses and cows in the field, which can be very annoying for them and is also very unhygienic. As a result, the livestock can contract eye infections and even worse, get sick. The autumn fly is attracted to sweat, both from humans and animals, as a result that these pests who are mainly active in the summer.

How do Autumn flies get into your living environment?

Fly infestations are often in the attic, as this is a place where they can develop quietly and are sometimes easily accessible through cracks and holes or through the roof tiles. Flies can hibernate here in peace, especially when there is a dead mouse or rat that they can feed on. Furthermore, flies can of course easily enter through windows or doors, unless you have taken good precautions, such as installing insect screens.

Do it yourself or outsource it?

There are many DIY products that can go a long way. Installing insect screens is also a good idea. If you cannot resolve it, because the swarms are too large or the problem occurs in your stable or poultry house, we advise you to contact us. We can help you with long-term and effective repel and control.

    Repel and prevent autumn flies

Autumn flies are removed by performing a seams and crevices treatment. This means that as many seams and cracks as possible are injected with a liquid, namely a suitable pesticide.

There is also the option of nebulizing or treating resting places. The pesticide used has a residual effect of more than 5 weeks, causing flies that come into contact with the liquid later on also to be affected. For preventative measures, we can always provide you with effective tailor-made advice.
