Inspection and advice on location by Protect Pest Control.
If you have a dog or a cat as a pet. You probably already know a thing or two about fleas. There are different types of fleas. For example the dog flea and the cat flea (the most common in the house). But also the human flea and the bird flea. Although the name cat flea suggests otherwise, it also occurs on dogs. We will remove the flea.
This also applies to the dog flea; it also feeds on cats. Fleas can cause itching, redness, infections and allergies in your animal. Because pets (especially cats) are very sensitive to almost all pesticides. It is important that you call in a professional such as Protect Pest Control in case of a plague. This ensures that the nuisance indoors is limited and resolved. So that you and your pets do not have to experience as much unrest as possible.
In some cases, you might not have pets, but you will, for example, have to deal with fleas after a move as a result of an uncontested infestation from the previous owner. In that case too, you can turn on Protect Pest Control and we will come up with a suitable solution, so that you quickly get rid of the problem.
The flea feeds on the blood of dogs or cats and even in humans this animal can sometimes make a test bite. A flea can survive on the host (namely the dog or cat), but also in or near the sleeping place of your pet. Having fleas is often very unpleasant for your pet as it causes itching and discomfort.
The itching is the result of a reaction of the body to the flea bite, but usually the bite itself does not really hurt. However, as a human you can get a flea bite and you can recognize it by small black spots with a red edge on your skin. Often there is little swelling, but fleas do prefer feet or lower legs. It can also happen that fleas bite the same place more than once.
It gets more annoying if you have a little one in the house that crawls on the floor, for example. Small children are therefore more likely to be bitten over the rest of their body. They are also often more sensitive to the bites. Protect Pest Control therefore advises you to contact immediately if fleas have been noticed in the environment of your small children to prevent these types of situations.
The dog flea is found on both dogs and cats and can be a carrier of the dog tapeworm virus. This can be transferred to humans and this variant is therefore a health risk in the home. The dog flea has a brown-black colour and will turn red as it has absorbed blood. These fleas are about 1 to 4 mm long and can jump 15 cm, allowing them to travel from host to host.
The cat flea is the most common and is flattened sideways, light yellow to black, wingless and has very well-developed legs. The difference between the dog flea and the cat flea is the length of the first cheek tooth comb. In a dog flea, the first cheek-tooth comb is about half the size of the second, but in the cat flea, the first tooth of the cheek-tooth comb is slightly shorter than the second. The cat flea larvae feed on dead insects and adult flea excrement. A flea’s eggs are usually laid on the ground, rather than the host.
You can therefore comb your pet well (and this is also recommended!), But there are often still countless eggs on the ground. Only when the cocoon receives a mechanical stimulus, for example a vibration, does the flea wake up and come out of the cocoon. Until this happens, an egg can remain dormant for a long time (up to two years!) And therefore not hatch. This may cause you to suffer from the flea infestation again after a flea-less period, because it has not yet been completely combated.
Cat fleas can act as an intermediate host for the dog tapeworm, so that your dog can eventually also suffer from this via the cat. It is therefore extra important to check your pets regularly for the presence of fleas and to vacuum them daily, especially just before the holidays.
A bird flea does not only live on birds, but also in the nests of birds that breed on or around houses. When the young birds leave the nests, the bird fleas often enter the houses and this can cause nuisance. Some bird fleas are also transmitters of disease. Bird fleas are flattened sideways, light brown to black, have no wings and distinct jumping legs. It is important to check birdhouses against the facade and remove old nests after fledging.
Fleas are brought in by your pet and then find seams and cracks in the house to lay eggs. Loose skirting boards, perforated floors or spaces are all good places for eggs to lie down until they are activated by a vibration. Fleas always try to settle on parts of the house that are not stepped on.
Often people try to deal with fleas with a flea infestation themselves and then unfortunately miss places with eggs. Fleas also sometimes lay eggs on the host, which then fall out of the coat and become hidden somewhere. Because these eggs are very difficult to see, flea infestations can last for a long time and sometimes seem impossible to control. Protect Pest Control can combat the pest in one go and ensure that all fleas and flea eggs are included, so that you do not get involved in a long-term control process. We provide a suitable custom solution in every situation.
